Tamaqua residents react to tremor, loud boom

Tamaqua area police are blaming a loud boom and tremor on a man who blew up a Jeep on coal mine property.

Tamaqua area residents are taking to social media to discuss the loud boom and what felt like a tremor in the area at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Susan Eckhart, who works in the Times News office in Tamaqua said, "It kind of jarred the building."

She described it as feeling like a house when it shakes as thunder booms near it.

"It was more noise than you usually hear," Eckhart said. "I felt the tremor and went to the window to see if a truck hit the building."

According to police, a man wanted to get rid of the Jeep so he drove it onto coal mine property, added a can of Tannerite, which is an exploding target used for firearms practice and containing the components of a binary explosive. He shot the Jeep to blow it up.

The matter is under investigation, police said.

Many Tamaqua residents are taking to Facebook to detect where the noise could have been from.

"It sounded really close to me and I'm in Hometown," wrote Stephen Blank.

Many reported their windows were shaken by the explosion.

"I heard it too on Elm St.," wrote Amanda Woodring. "Shook the whole house."
