Ashtown bridge work to begin in 2017
A Lehighton bridge is scheduled for rehabilitation work next year.
On a unanimous vote, borough council on Monday agreed to advertise the Ashtown Drive Bridge Rehabilitation Project, per correspondence from Coleman Environmental Engineering, LLC.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the borough has been working with McMahon Transportation Engineers, which is the state Department of Transportation's bridge inspectors, on the substructure repairs to the bridge. Beckett said the borough received its Department of Environmental Protection permit in mid-2016 to enter the stream.She said the borough will advertise the project in January, with construction expected to commence in late June, and be completed by August.The funds to pay for the project will come from Highway Aid, said Beckett, who added the borough has $75,000 budgeted for the project.In other actionCouncil also approved:• Awarding a bid to Service Construction in the amount of $19,344 to complete the fifth bay in the borough's new Light & Power Building. The construction will include the installation of an office, lunch room, restroom and utility room.• A lease agreement with William Moyer for property for a digital sign, as well as a resolution authorizing Beckett to execute a lease agreement with Moyer. The sign will be placed on the borough parking lot on Sergeant Stanley Hoffman Boulevard across the trailhead.• Hiring Elias Batihk as a part-time police officer, who will start at the rate of $18.99 per hour.• A resolution setting the 2017 rate of contribution to the Police Pension Fund• A resolution setting the 2017 salaries for nonunion employees and professional staff• The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement for the term of Jan. 1, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2019.• Changes to the borough's Group Health Plan.• Putting the police department's 2011 Ford Crown Victoria out for bid.• Tabling a request from the tax collector asking the borough to consider an increase.• The Christmas Light Contest Winners list.• The Madd Batters 5K on May 13.• Advertising the 2017 borough meeting dates.• Announcing the borough municipal building will be closed Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
