Polk supervisors approve 2017 budget with no increase

Polk Township's board of supervisors approved the 2017 budget at Monday's meeting, with a total over $2.8 million.

The general fund amounted to just under $2.5 million, in addition to $313,092 from the Highway Aid Fund."We have a road project coming up that we have to pay out of the general fund, and that's something out of the ordinary," board chairman Brian K. Ahner said of the large amount. The board maintained themillage rate at 4.3.The board also discussed plans for the housing development "The Woods," which is to be located on Haney Road in Kunkletown. The development, which has been a slow-going project due to economic issues, has begun to pick up as of late. The supervisors' agenda listed a discussion of the developer's agreement draft during Monday's meeting, although the board decided to set the issue aside for a work session."We have a couple little things about the language that we want to iron out," Ahner said.A discussion on renovations for the Lower Middle Creek Bridge cited issues with some of the potential improvements suggested by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation."It's in pretty good shape, but they're looking to change the guard rails around and add signage to it," Ahner said of the old structure. There are talks of adding guide rails in the concrete of the bridge, though Ahner is skeptical of the decision, which could slim down an already narrow passage."I don't want to put guard rails in, because then we're going to lose another 10 inches on each side," Ahner said, pointing out that no one has hit the bridge before, and that the narrower passage could result in more collisionson the bridge. In addition, Ahner mentioned that the rails and signs could potentially cause problems with nearby driveways, obstructing lines of sight. The report was denoted as a clarification regarding questions initially brought up by the board on the project, and while the plans will need to be revised, board members did say it provided some direction for the renovations.
