LV's Martel relieved to get back in scoring column
The Phantoms dominated the Providence Bruins Saturday night, winning 7-1 for their fifth win in a row.
On a stretch like that, you wouldn't think there would be much worry or pressure on the players, but in the case of Danick Martel, that wasn't the case coming into the game with the Bruins.Martel, 22, scored four goals in the first six games of the season and then went 12 games before scoring his fifth. He had gone another five games without a goal coming into Saturday.Against Providence, Will O'Neill fired a shot on goal that was destined to go high and to the right of the goal, but Martel was positioned perfectly and basically bunted the ball past Providence goalie Malcolm Subban to end his scoring drought and give Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead.A period later, Martel struck again after he took a pass from Mark Zengerle from behind the net."I thought I wouldn't score anymore goals," said Martel with a sly laugh after the win. "I've been squeezing my stick pretty hard, but after that first one, I realized that the stick was going easier."While Martel admits that he was pressing a little, he didn't start just firing on the net with every touch of the puck. Instead, he stayed patient and picked his spots, but just wasn't getting the results. With the Phantoms going on an eight-day break, Saturday's performance made a huge difference for Martel in how he approaches the time off."Going on break after a big game, I think when I come back, I'll be at the top of my game. I've been shooting, but haven't been getting goals. It's not that I've been playing bad, but wasn't getting goals. I had nine shots in Syracuse, but the goals just weren't coming, so I think today that it just came for me."Coach Scott Gordon was happy to see Martel get a couple goals going into the break. He's been happy with his overall play and believes that Martel has handled the slump well, but it was the perfect time to get him back in the scoring column."He's had some great chances," remarked coach Scott Gordon. "(On Friday) he had some great chances. It was good to see him get some goals and get some weight off his shoulders."HOME SWEET HOME ... The Phantoms five-game win streak has all been at home, which is a pleasant turnaround from how they've played at the PPL Center in their first two seasons in the Lehigh Valley. Their next game is at home on Dec. 26 against Hershey, before they go to Rochester for two games and play in Hartford, before returning home again.WELCOME BACK ... Zac Rinaldo, who played 223 games with the Flyers and another 95 games with the Phantoms while they were in Adirondack, is with Providence now and played Saturday. Rinaldo committed a crucial interference penalty when he hit Martel from behind and the Phantoms capitalized on the power play opportunity.SCOREBOARD WATCHING ... Even with their win streak, Lehigh Valley is getting matched game-for-game by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The two teams are tied atop the Atlantic Division with 41 points.VIEW FROM THE TOP ... Goalie Alex Lyon opened the season backing up Anthony Stolarz, but with "Stolie The Goalie" up with the Flyers, Lyon has taken over and is doing well for himself. The 24-year-old leads the AHL in wins with 13 although he's 20th overall in goals-against-average at 2.63 per game.
