Colon lifts Bulldogs

It's not how long you lead, it's when you lead that counts.

Northern Lehigh held just one advantage after halftime against Moravian Academy on Friday night, but it came when it mattered most.Gio Colon's inside basket with 2.4 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs pulled out a thrilling 50-49 Colonial League victory."These kids are so resilient," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jeff Miller. "When they get down, they just get tougher. This proves to them that they're never out of a game. We were down six, with (1:42) to go, and they just battled and battled."They work so hard in practice. I tell everybody we were young last year, and we're even younger this year. This is a big win for them confidence-wise, to realize they can play with the better teams in the Colonial League."Down by six with five minutes to play in regulation, Preston Kemery and Colon both hit shots inside to keep Nolehi close. With a minute to go, Mason Seiler connected on a three-pointer to knot the game at 43-43. The Bulldogs (2-2; 1-1) did have a final shot in the closing seconds to win, but a runner in the lane was off the mark. The Lions again grabbed a six-point lead on a jumper by Jovi Rodriguez and four free throws. But as Miller's team proved all night long, that advantage wasn't safe.Colon hit a pair of foul shots with 36.7 seconds left to cut the gap to four. After a pair of missed free throws by Moravian and a rebound by Joe Egan, Nolehi came down and closed within one on a Brandon Hess three-pointer.Following two more misses at the charity stripe by the Lions, the Bulldogs worked the ball down low to Colon who put up the winning shot."I didn't feel comfortable," said Moravian mentor Steve Gabryluk of the OT lead. "We had to hit our foul shots and take care of the basketball, and we didn't do that."Northern Lehigh is scrappy, they don't quit and they're disciplined. Give them credit."Kemery paced the winners with 12 points, while Seiler and Colon finished with 10. Hess contributed nine, and Egan pulled down 13 rebounds. Nick Seier added tough defense against Moravian's top player - Jordan Holmquist."It's a big win for the program," said Miller. "It's the home opener, a nice crowd, Hall of Fame night, so hopefully it gets some excitement in the school and the community. Hopefully it gets people to come out and see these young men play because they're fun to watch ... They just don't give up."JV GAME ... Moravian Academy won the JV contest, 47-36. Nate Keller with 10 points and AJ Berger with nine led Nolehi.A BIGGER DEFICIT ... The Lions used a 9-0 run in the third quarter to go ahead 33-22. That was quickly erased, though, as Nolehi countered with an 11-0 spurt to tie the game. Kemery had five points during that comeback.HALL OF FAME ... Northern Lehigh held its Hall of Fame night at halftime, inducting standout wrestler Larry Rehrig and successful football coach Jim Tkach. The players remained on the bench to watch the ceremonies. "We do that every year, honoring those being put into the Hall of Fame," said Miller. "I want our young men to strive to be like them ... We want them to sit there, enjoy it, and have respect for those going into the Hall."MORAVIAN ACADEMYMessman 3-0-1-6, Rodriguez 2-1-1-5, Holmquist 6-4-6-19, Woolley 2-0-2-5, Kruklitis 0-2-5-2, Quainoo 2-2-2-6, Durrani 0-0-0-0, Meissner 1-0-0-2, Chioradia 2-0-2-4.
