A problem with inmates flushing bed sheets, rags and food wrappers may cost them access to the commissary if it doesn't stop, officials said.

On Wednesday, the prison board discussed an incident that happened last month as a result of inmates flushing food wrappers and other nonflushable items down the drain.Charles Neff, the prison maintenance supervisor, said that three weeks ago the sewer system at the prison backed up with debris in the tank, resulting in a service call to a septic company to remove the debris.Last week, the same issue happened because the main shredder was clogged.Neff said that he pulled out part of a rag and aluminum foil packet from tuna fish that were the culprits."They're flushing wrappers and using it like a garbage disposal," he said.Warden Timothy Fritz said that he has put the inmates on notice as a result of the two incidents. He said that if things don't stop getting flushed that aren't supposed to, then he will shut down the prison commissary."About four or five years ago, we had the same problem and took commissary away from them for about three weeks," he said. "It solved the problem for a while."
