A Lehighton native was one of two students from Misericordia University who presented at The American Society for Cell Biology Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
The presentation highlighted the research they conducted into nerve disorders as fellows in the Misericordia University Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program.Atasha Rehrig, daughter of Walter and Denise Rehrig, of Lehighton made the presentation "Differential Expression of AKAP95, Krox-20 and Cyclin D3 in Mitogen-Stimulated Immortalized Rat Schwann Cell Culture."She and Michael Blazaskie of Hanover Township were advised by Angela Asirvatham,associate professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences.Rehrig and Blazaski found that when Schwann cells are treated with growth factors that are normally secreted by neurons, intracellular proteins called A-Kinase Anchoring Proteins appear to regulate myelination.The discovery is applicable to scientists who are working to restore or improve coordination and/or limb movement for victims of spinal cord injuries, stroke and related disorders.
