Falcons soar past Northern Lehigh

The Northern Lehigh girls' basketball team is a work in progress.

Rather than focus on wins and losses, Bulldogs' head coach Ken Schankweiler wants his players to concentrate instead on the "little things."After Northern Lehigh dropped a 48-23 setback to Salisbury in its regular season home opener Wednesday night, Schankweiler spoke immediately about working on those "little things.""We're working on positioning to box out," Schankweiler said. "We're working on defense, making sure to help each other out and how to react to the ball. We're working on offense. We need to set our screens. We need to know when to dribble."We have a lot of girls that haven't played a lot of basketball, and you can see that."But, those "little things" worked wonders for the Bulldogs in the early going against the Falcons. After Salisbury's Kelly Gardus opened the scoring with a bucket, the Bulldogs' Jada Saeger answered with a jumper and then followed by finishing off a three-point play when she was fouled on a lay-up. Saeger's actions gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead early in the first quarter. After the Falcons' Caylin Meikrantz hit two free throws to pull within one, the Bulldogs' Jill Olewine drove to the basket for a quick two and a 7-4 lead. The Bulldogs' lead, however, was short-lived as the Falcons went on an 11-0 run. After finding itself in a bit of a hole, it looked as if those "little things" were starting to work in Northern Lehigh's favor again, as they scored on three of their first four shots. Jada Mills hit two lay-ups and Saeger hit a jump to pull them within eight. But, that's as close as the Bulldogs would get."We had a little better first half," Schankweiler said. "We made a little run in the third. But, then we gave up a couple of threes with people out of position and we were in trouble."While the Falcons took complete control in the fourth quarter, Schankweiler knows this is only the beginning to a long road of progress ahead for his Bulldogs."We won't quit," Schankweiler said. "I promise that's what we will do this year. They'll keep fighting back. They'll be a different team by the second half."LUCKY NO. 7 ...Salisbury has won seven straight against Northern Lehigh.
