Blue Raider swim teams aim to compete
The 2016 Tamaqua swim team doesn't have a ton of numbers.
While it might be difficult to compete on a team-score basis, there are swimmers on the roster who could make an individual splash by the end of the season."Nothing has really changed from last year," said Tamaqua head coach Allen Bostdorff. "Both teams are suffering from total lack of depth - particularly the boys team. I only have a total of two freshmen swimmers this year."On the boys side, Billy Shilko will be returning. He finished fourth in districts last year."He has made good progress since last season," said the Tamaqua coach. "Billy Frederick should also be very competitive as a diver."Jeff Letterhouse also returns. Bostdorff mentioned that he is solid in all strokes. Four new faces will look to make an impact, as the Raiders aim to make up for key departures such as Thorn Devlin and Ben Turrano, who graduated last spring.Chris Miller, Dan Yates, Nate Steigerwalt, and freshman Ethan Turrano will all contribute."As you can see, we have no depth and both limited skill and experience," Bostdorff said. "My only game plan is to have each kid enjoy the experience and develop as much as possible."Rebecca Kanaskie is the captain of the girls team, and for good reason. The senior was a District 11 third place medalist in the 100 breast, was second in the 200 IM, and was a part of the second-place medley relay team.Helping Kanaskie lead the charge is fellow senior Abby Brickler, who excels in the freestyle, butterfly, and team relay competitions. Brickler was a district finalist in the 50-yard freestyle last year.Another swimmer that made a mark in the District 11 competition last year is Sarah Maue. The sophomore was a district finalist in both the 200 IM and 100 breast. Another young swimmer to look out for is Samantha Wagner, whose season was shortened last season due to injury."Again, our gals will individually compete at a high lever," Bostdorff said. "However, the depth simply provides us very limited chances to win on a team-score basis."
