Blue ChristmasChristmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member or friend who has died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. As the days grow shorter, our spirits may be sinking. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us, and we want to remember the birth of Jesus even when we may not feel joyful. For these reasons, St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, offers a special "Longest Night/Blue Christmas" service at 7 p.m. Dec. 21.The public is invited to attend, sharing and hearing prayers, Scripture, candle light and music that acknowledge that God's presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God's word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it), is welcome. The church will also hold Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. Dec. 24, and a service of lessons and carols at 9 a.m. Christmas Day.Contact the Times News at 800-443-0377 or
