New coach, new philosophy for No. Lehigh girls

Over the last four years, the Northern Lehigh girls' basketball team hasn't been on the winning end very often after 32 minutes of play.

Ken Shankweiler will take over the helm of the program after spending the last two years as an assistant for the Bulldogs, and doesn't want to hear anything about wins or losses."I don't believe in teaching to win," Shankweiler said. "I believe in teaching to play the game the right way and the winning comes. I always hated the term 'They need to learn how to win.' They don't need to learn how to win, we just need to learn how to play basketball, and the winning will come eventually."The core of returning Bulldogs will consist of seniors Karlyna Kemery and Ashley Wilk, juniors Jillian Olewine, Kate Ziegler, and Dani Hoffman, and sophomore Kate GuelchnerOlewine (12.2 ppg) and Ziegler (2.7 ppg) saw action in all 22 games last season, while Karlyna Kemery (21 games) and Dani Hoffman (19 games) gained valuable experience.Shankweiler feels they need to take a step or two back in order to work on the "little things" to help them progress further than where they where a year ago."It's going to be all about fundamentals," Schankweiler said. "It's going to be simple basketball. We're not going to run 25 defenses. We're going to get good at running our offenses. We're going to get good at what we run. It's going to be simple basketball. It really is. We're not tall and we're not extremely fast. We don't have too many talented ball handlers. We really just need to play solid, simple basketball."While depth is a concern for the Bulldogs this season with only 13 players on the roster, Shankweiler intends to possibly go seven or eight deep into each game.Sophomore Jada Saeger (a transfer from Catasauqua), along with freshmen Jada Mills and Lauren Hoffman, will get some minutes to better their basketball skills against pure competition."I know they want to be better than we have been," Shankweiler said. "I know they do and they keep bringing it up. I have been telling them, 'If we have a bad game, you got to remember last year. If we have a bad practice, you got to remember last year. I keep asking them how it felt last year, and if they want to feel that way again. I think they want to improve as players, as competitors. I think they finally want to feel good about themselves."
