Juniors ready to lead Panthers this year

Panther Valley graduated a handful of quality wrestlers last spring.

However, there are still 12 juniors on the team that combined for 125 wins last season, and they're ready to make some more noise. That includes juniors Hunter and Tanner Kennedy, who led the Panthers with 36 and 26 wins, respectively. This season, Hunter will jump from the 138 -pound to 160-pound weight class."Hunter was seconds away from qualifying for states last year," said Panther Valley head coach Tim Robb. "Tanner had a good year last year, and we're expecting big things. Both are very solid and have a serious shot at going to and placing at the state tournament."Three more juniors help headline the bulk of the Panthers' nucleolus.Justin Rodriguez will wrestle at 220 pounds this season, coming off a 2015 campaign in which he earned 19 wins."The sky is the limit for him," said the Panther Valley coach. "He's a freakish athlete, but needs to learn to keep his head."Xander Kern and Hunter Kerestes are two other noteworthy juniors to keep an eye on.While the junior class is a huge component of the team, there was a freshman last season who won 23 matches.Kyle Rusnak, now a sophomore, will lock down the 132-pound class. Robb mentioned of his fantastic 2015 season, and he expects success at this spot in 2016."We have good numbers," explained the PV coach. "We should be able to fill a lineup most of the time. However, we have some real inexperience at several weights."The Panthers will face another change of bumping down to Division 2 in the Schuylkill League this season."While I really wanted to be Division 1 again this year, Division 2 will be very competitive," Robb said. "Upper Dauphin and Williams Valley are both very good teams, while Tri-Valley is always solid. I think that at the league tournament, we will see a lot of balance between the two divisions."Malik Zever and Tyler Baez are two more juniors who didn't wrestle for the program last season, but could quickly become big assets to the lineup. Zever transferred back to the school district from Marian, while Baez has an opportunity to start at 195 pounds, despite not wrestling since seventh grade."We feel that we can contend for the Division 2 title," Robb said. "Very tough Upper Dauphin and Williams Valley teams make it much tougher than it was in past. We want to make the District 11 tournament and place in the top four. Both goals are reachable, but neither is given or even easy to do."

The 2016 Panther Valley wrestling team will consist of, front row, from left, Colby Newton, Brandon Myers, Miguel Santiago, Hunter Kennedy, Louden Breiner, Malik Zever and Justin Ogozalek.
