Man admits endangering child, woman with knife

A Carbon County man admitted on Friday to endangering a child and a female with a knife in an incident that occurred earlier this year.

David P. Washburn Jr., 26, of Palmerton, pleaded guilty on Friday before Judge Joseph J. Matika to one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.Washburn was arrested by state police at Lehighton on Feb. 9 when he went to the home of his girlfriend, April Vankirk, at 243 Little Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township. He entered the home with a knife and chased Vankirk around a kitchen table in the home while she was holding his 3-year-old son. Two other people in the home managed to restrain him until police arrived. He was originally charged with 13 criminal counts including aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, five counts of recklessly endangering and four counts of harassment. All were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office except the two he pleaded too.Matika said the court will consider the deadly weapon enhancement provision of the law in the case at the time of sentencing. He said if he decides to invoke the provision, any jail term imposed will be lengthened due to the provision. He deferred sentencing so Washburn could apply for placement in the Intermediate Punishment Program — house arrest.
