Carbon County court - DUI

A Texas driver pleaded Tuesday in Carbon County court to two counts of driving under the influence. He was one of nine to plea to drunken driving counts before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Rene Colon, 43, of Deer Park, was arrested on the first charge on Sept. 25, 2015, by Kidder Township police along Route 903. The second arrest occurred on Oct. 10, 2015, along Lake Drive in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. In both cases he refused to submit to a blood test.Colon said he was in the area working on a pipeline project at the time.On both counts Matika sentenced him to serve eight days to six months in prison, with the terms running concurrently. He must also pay fines totaling $1,300, two years of license suspensions, render 25 hours of community service and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.He began the jail term immediately.Sharon Ann Cossack, 51, of McAdoo, was arrested on May 13 along Spruce Street in Banks Township by state police at Hazleton. A test revealed a 0.22 BAC.She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render 25 hours of community service.William Neil Rice, 40, of Freeland, was arrested on July 18 along Main Street by Weatherly police. A test revealed a 0.21 BAC.He was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Shamendez M. Onsoy, 34, of Brooklyn, New York, was arrested on March 15, 2015, by state police at Fern Ridge along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred because Onsoy needs to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and will apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.Luis Rosado, 26, of West Hazleton, was arrested on March 16 along Interstate 80 in East Side Borough by state police at Fern Ridge. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred because Rosado needs a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation.Joel Nicholas Puppo, 53, of Albrightsville, was arrested on Sept. 28 along Route 534 in Albrightsville by Kidder Township police. A test revealed a 0.19 BAC.He was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one-year license suspension, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 5 p.m. Dec. 2 and serve it in consecutive one-day increments.April Marie Yurkonis, 38, of Pottsville, was arrested on April 23, 2015, along I-80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test revealed a 0.16 BAC. She also pleaded to driving under suspension-DUI related.Sentencing was deferred.Susan Lynn Steinhauser, 35, of Saylorsburg, was arrested on Aug. 20, 2015, by state police at Lehighton along Route 443 in Mahoning Township. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so she could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and apply for the IPP.Jeffrey Camy Luc, 33, of Pittsburgh, was arrested on March 1 along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Luc can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole and follow all recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
