Weatherly taxes same in 2017
Weatherly Borough Council gave preliminary approval to the 2017 budget, with no planned tax increase for residents.
A new garbage contract with County Waste was approved in the amount of $636,400 for five years.Council enacted a fire protection agreement with Packer Township. Services were being provided before, but now it's in writing with clauses satisfactory to both towns.A proclamation was adopted for Joseph Genetti and Ryan Kelly for achieving Eagle Scout rank. Another proclamation was enacted for Councilman Joseph Cyburt for his public service with the borough, and his recognition by the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce.A resolution was approved to adopt the Carbon County 2015 Hazard Mitigation plan for the borough of Weatherly.The authorization for the solicitor to advertise a revised traffic and vehicle ordinance was tabled until the next meeting for review.Weatherly resident Jeff Miller asked if there were copies of the new traffic and vehicle ordinance.Pudlinersaid it wouldn't be available until the council votes to approve it, but that he could have a copy of the one in place now.He said the new one clarifies certain points and reorganizes it for ease of understanding, and it is not a complete overhaul.Mayor Tom Connors presented an idea of a halushki festival to do something fun for the town and that could also raise funds for groups that might need the money. The council agreed to it.Schwab schoolMiller also asked if there was an update on purchasing the Schwab School.Connors said the Save Our School group has been in negotiation with the bank, and that the group is only $10,000 short of what is needed to purchase the school.He said they've received donations for as little as $20 and as much as $5,000, but that they need people to really send in their pledges as soon as possible so the building can be acquired shortly."We are very excited, and it's really good news," he said.
