Talking is still the best form of communication

I was recently asked to speak about communication in the workplace and how to utilize each avenue strategically.

Today, in both our personal and professional lives, technology connects us more than ever with email and text messaging offering a quick, easy and efficient way to communicate. Many times, an answer to a question can be found in seconds, reports and projects emailed in a flash, and our work day far from the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I've embraced the advances, and make sure to switch it up to best serve the situation.Pick up the phone: Take time to call someone instead of emailing or texting for a change. At times, electronic messages can be misread or misunderstood; one may assume there is a certain tone in a message.By taking the time to call someone, you can connect on a more personal level with voice to voice communication, especially when you are calling to say "thank you."You'll have an opportunity to enjoy a discussion. "The best way to lead people into the future is to connect with them deeply in the present." - James Kouzes and Barry PosnerMeet in person: The face-to-face meeting is a great way to build relationships and trust as body language and emotions surface during conversation. You'll have an opportunity to share stories, make eye contact and feel emotions."When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity." - Dale CarnegieMake it a point to talk to new people at an event: It is human nature to gravitate to the people you know, but challenge yourself to meet new people to when you are at an event by introducing yourself first. This is a certain way to increase your network, obtain new clients and make new friends.Send a handwritten note: Pick up a pack of note cards and send a few hand written thank you notes. It is nice to receive a special message, and enjoyable to write a few as well.Today, our avenues of communication are endless, but make sure to change it up. Respond to messages in a timely manner, be clear with your message and talk things through when needed. See you at our next event - where you will have the opportunity to communicate and network.Marlyn Kissner is executive vice president of the Northern Region, of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce - Carbon Chamber and Economic Development.
