Man gets prison term after toddler shoots self with his gun

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania man is facing 9 to 18 months behind bars because a toddler used the man's handgun to shoot himself inside the man's home last year.

PennLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/2fmCk4K ) 22-year-old Cody Asher of Montoursville was sentenced on Monday. He was found guilty in September of charges including endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.The judge says he wanted to send a message about the accountability of firearms, particularly in homes with children.Zachery Lee shot himself inside Asher's home in March 2015. The 2-year-old has recovered.Asher's attorney says his client lost his job over the shooting.The boy's mother, Amanda Lynn Fry, who also lived at the home, was accepted in January into a program designed for nonviolent first-time offenders.
