Weissport seeking bids for garbage collection

Although Weissport Borough Council is working on its 2017 municipal budget, it won't know for at least two weeks what trash collection rates will be.

The council's present trash collection contract expires at the end of the year. The borough advertised this week for bids for service after Jan. 1.The ad gives the borough the option of a contract for one, two or three years.The bids will be opened at the council's next regular meeting, which will be held at 7

p.m.Dec. 5.A budget meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday.In other business:• The council hired Dennis Moyer of Weissport as a part-time maintenance worker at the rate of $8.50 per hour.• Jay Frey, owner of Chantilly Goods, Weissport, offered to donate a large Christmas tree for the borough park. One tree has been placed at the gazebo by the Beltzville Lions Club. The tree being donated by Frey will be placed at the opposite end of the park.Frey said he will remove it after Christmas.• The council approved the county's Hazard Mitigation Plan as required by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. The plan is a mandatory document for the borough's obtaining of federal funds in the event of a disaster.
