In Weissport, it's truly beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

On Saturday morning, members of the Beltzville Lions Club, borough council members, the Weissport Recreation Committee and other volunteers strung more than a half mile of lights, installed dozens of plastic candy canes, decorated a tree, constructed lighted archways and put up assorted other decorations.The decorations are in anticipation of Weissport's first Christmas lights display in the park.A lighting of the tree will occur at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.Thomas Zellner, president of the Beltzville Lions Club, said candy canes will be given to children who attend. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be available for purchase.Music will be provided by disc jockey Brian Gombert.Gail Maholick, a Lions member, said the 8-foot Christmas tree was donated to the club and the borough by Yenser's Tree Farm in Mahoning Township.She said the lights were donated by Franklin Township Lions Club, who ran a Festival of Lights at Phifer's Ice Dam in the township for several years. The festival is not being held this year.The Weissport Schoolhouse Reunion donated the candy canes. Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank is also contributing to the project, she said.A shed for the event was donated by Storage Solutions of Franklin Township.Weissport Borough Council members Greg May and Arland Moyer assisted with the park decorating. May said, "I think this is a good thing for the borough."Maholick was pleased with the support received for the project. "We have three Lions Clubs helping out, we have volunteers and the borough has been great to work with," she said.
