When the list for the final week of our Grid Picks games came out, that was my initial reaction.Over the course of the season, it's hard enough trying to predict the winner of games in the Times News area and those among District 11 schools.But with the state playoffs underway, trying to figure out who will triumph among teams from surrounding districts is an even greater challenge.Patrick Matsinko has moved into first place and is in the driver's seat for our "championship."Bob Ford, Brad Hurley, Andy Steinmetz and myself are all chasing Pat the Mat. After 13 long weeks, it's hard to believe that a game like Muncy vs. Steelton-Highspire might decide our title.PEN ARGYL VS. NOTRE DAME ... The Green Knights avenged one of its regular-season losses by defeating Palisades last week in the playoffs. Now it's Notre Dame's turn, who fell to Pen Argyl during Week 8 ... Notre Dame 35-24.WEST CATHOLIC VS. SCHUYLKILL HAVEN ... Haven has had an outstanding season, using its ground attack to claim another district title. West Catholic may have five losses, but against 2A teams it is 4-0 by a combined 201-40 score ... West Catholic 42-21.WHITEHALL VS. ABINGTON HEIGHTS ... Whitehall has won four in a row and hopes to continue the streak. Dez Boykin and the Zephyrs speed will give the Comets trouble. Whitehall not used to playingSaturday afternoon games, but still prevail ... Whitehall 28-25.FREEDOM VS. PARKLAND ... Parkland shut out Freedom in their regular-season matchup, but that means nothing now. The Patriots seem to be peaking at the right time, and their offensive line has been the key. Trojans looking for fifth straight district title ... Freedom 21-20.WILLIAMS VALLEY VS. LACKAWANNA TRAIL ... Vikings have to be confident after their amazing comeback win over Marian. Lackawanna Trail, however, is also confident with wins in six of the last seven weeks. Tough schedule against many quality 2A teams gives edge to Lions ... Lackawanna Trail 28-20.POTTSGROVE VS. BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC ... Pottsgrove is coming off an emotional upset of Interboro to capture the District 1 title, while Bethlehem Catholic is still celebrating its district title after getting revenge against Saucon Valley. Going with some District 11 bias here ... Bethlehem Catholic 31-21.MONTOURSVILLE AT SCRANTON PREP ... Scranton Prep has won 11 straight after a loss on opening night. Look for the Cavaliers to make it an even dozen against a tough Warriors squad ... Scranton Prep 27-13.MUNCY VS. STEELTON-HIGHSPIRE ... Neither team has a winning record, but both are playing in late November. The coin flip says ... Steelton-Highspire 17-14.STATE COLLEGE VS. WILLIAMSPORT ... This contest pits State College's stellar defense versus Williamsport's high-powered offense. This game could go either way, and the winner might be playing a few more weeks after this contest. Supposedly, defense wins championships ... State College 23-21.BERWICK AT NORTH POCONO ... Berwick didn't have the best regular season, but everything starts new in the playoffs. The Bulldogs have played well in two postseason games, one which was a win over a team that defeated North Pocono (West Scranton) ... Berwick 14-10.YORK CATHOLIC VS. DUNMORE ... These two teams are a combined 22-1. The undefeated Bucks allow just nine points per game, while the Irish have won their last five games by an average margin of 30 points. Unsure but going with ... Dunmore 30-23.SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT AT SO. COLUMBIA ... Southern Columbia is undefeated, has scored at least 35 points in every game, has an average margin of victory of 34.3 points. Need more evidence to take the Tigers? ... So. Columbia 44-14.BISHOP MCDEVITT AT SHIPPENSBURG ... A trip to the District 3 finals is on the line. Shippensburg has the better record, but Crusaders are after their seventh straight district crown ... Bishop McDevitt 34-20.C. DAUPHIN EAST AT WILSON WEST LAWN ... Both teams have suffered losses to Central Dauphin. West Lawn is on an eight-game winning streak and is among numerous state rankings. So, gotta go with the Bulldogs ...
