No tax hike for Franklin residents

For the seventh consecutive year, residents of Franklin Township won't have any municipal tax increase.

The supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved the tentative 2017 budgets, which call for the tax rates to remain unchanged.Garbage collection fees also will stay the same as they've been since 2009.Chairman Rob E. Green said the budget is based on 7.637 mills. This includes a 6.3-mill tax for general purposes, 0.537 mills for the capital reserve building fund and 0.800 for fire hydrants.Green said the last time the taxes were raised was in 2010 when they were put up a half-mill.Trash collection rates are $215 for residents if paid by Feb. 28, and $225 if paid from March 1.A special senior citizen rate for trash collection is $150 if paid by Feb. 28, and $160 if paid after that."Garbage rates have not increased since 2010, but it's really getting tight," Green said of the garbage budget. The township operates its own trash collection. He said one reason rates haven't gone up is because of recycling, which he said has "lowered the tonnage that goes out."Final adoption of the budget will occur when the supervisors meet on Dec. 20.
