A Susquehanna County woman who snorted drugs and then passed out while leaving her then 1-year-old child alone in a Carbon County park was sentenced to a time-served term Monday in Carbon County court after previously pleading to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

Michelle Pellew, 28, of Montrose, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to 26 days to one day less 24 months followed by 36 months of probation.Serfass said he was imposing the time-served sentence based on all the things Pellew has done since the incident to address a serious addiction problem, which included entering a inpatient rehabilitation program, continuing weekly counseling sessions and remaining drug free as noted in frequent testing.The incident occurred on Aug. 31, 2015, at the Lehighton grove/playground along Iron Street.At 4:55 p.m., borough police were dispatched to the area after the county communications center received a call from a man who said a young child was left alone in the park while a female was lying on the ground unresponsive.When police arrived they found Pellew unconscious. She did not immediately respond to police when they tried to wake her up.An area resident who was at the playground with his grandchildren was the one who called police. He told officers the young child was left alone and playing near a sliding board and almost fell about 5 to 6 feet from it.He said he saw the woman he believed to be the child's mother, lying on the ground, apparently asleep.Police called for an ambulance. As medical personnel were treating Pellew for a drug overdose, she woke up. She told police she came to the playground area and purchased five packs of heroin. She said she snorted two packs and passed out. She admitted leaving her child.Serfass said the court realizes that if it were not for a good Samaritan at the grove who called police and watched over the child until police arrived, the incident could have been tragic.Defense Attorney Matthew J. Rapa said Pellew has done everything asked of her to address is problem and said she is a "much different woman today than when this occurred."Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo said he commends Pellew for what she has done to help herself but feels "26 days is not enough." He said given the circumstances of the incident he feels additional jail time should be imposed, despite the recommendation of the probation office for a probation term.Serfass said he feels "a long period of supervision is need to address her rehabilitative needs."Serfass also ordered Pellew to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and render a total of 250 hours community service.
