A formerly Carbon County resident was given a year to five years in jail on Monday after previously pleading guilty to driving under the influence.

Richard Gechter, 47, of Coplay, and formerly of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass on a DUI count and also charges of simple assault and resisting arrest.He was arrested on April 24, 2014,in Lehighton. Officer Matthew Bender stopped Gechter for speeding, 43 mph in a 25 zone. At the stop Bender smelled alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.Gechter got out of the vehicle and was told he was being placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. Gechter tried to flee and Bender restrained him.The two struggled with Bender sustaining an injury to his right hand. Gechter was finally subdued and taken into custody.Gechter is currently serving a six-month to five-year prison term in Lehigh County for DUI. He has one more month to serve on that sentence.Serfass imposed the 12 to 60 months on the DUI, six to one day less 24 on the simple assault and resisting charges with the terms running concurrently and concurrent with Lehigh County.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500 and one-year license suspension for the DUI. He was ordered to make total restitution of $1,813.61 to the borough of Lehighton and its insurance carrier for injuries to Bender and damages. On a speeding charge he was fined $61 and costs and also must render a total of 300 hours of community service when release on parole.He was given credit for one day. He was granted work release privileges.
