Carbon woman given jail term for her part in theft incidents

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term after previously admitting her part in theft and burglary incidents.

Kayla M. Smith, 25, of Palmerton, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of six to one day less 24 months in the county prison on charges of criminal trespass and receiving stolen property. The jail term will be followed by one year of probation.She was charged by Mahoning Township police with receiving stolen property on June 15, 2015.In that case she was accused of stealing mail from five people.In the second case Smith was charged by Lehighton police with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property, also on June 15, 2015.In that case, she is accused of breaking into her in-laws' home and stealing items.Smith admitted to a drug addiction problem. She is also facing a probation revocation proceeding.In addition to the jail term Nanovic ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, make restitution of $145.58, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation.Smith is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charges and the pending probation proceeding. She was given credit for five days on the sentence.
