Indians eliminated

BLOOMSBURG - Opportunity breeds success.

And Lake Lehman's field hockey team had plenty of it during the PIAA Class 1A state quarterfinals against Lehighton on Saturday.Lehman's 18 corners and 19 shots on goal led to an 8-0 rout of the Indians, which bounced the Tribe from the PIAA postseason."I said the first week of practice that this could be the journey that they went on if they worked hard," said Lake Lehman head coach Jean Lipski. "And they played hard all year. We take every game one at a time. You can never look ahead too far."It didn't take long for the Black Knights to get in a rhythm.Taylor Alba scored on a Makayla Adams assist at the 21-minute mark, and Carey-Anne Keper scored just a minute later on a Miranda Martin feed. Keiper scored twice more before intermission, as Lehman took a 5-0 lead into halftime."We've actually been behind a couple of times and they've come back," said the Lake Lehman coach. "In fact, in our last game, we played from behind. They just stay really calm. You didn't see them celebrate and go crazy, they just do their job. Now it's time to do the next one. That's just how they've taken this entire season. They're very calm and seasoned."Lehman had much reason to remain calm, as the Black Knights added three more scores after the break. While Lehman had chance after chance, the Tribe mustered only one corner and one shot throughout the contest.Lipski explained that her club was focused on corners and playing unselfish hockey."Their passing game is what's so beautiful," said the Lake Lehman coach. "When their passing game is on, and they're talking to each other, it's beautiful to watch. It seems that every big game, we try to give them a little something new to think about so they don't get lethargic. There's always a little new wrinkle, and that keeps them sharp. That's something new we've been working on, to one-time it from the corners. They don't have to take a big back swing, just put the ball in the cage. We've seen that happen today."Lehighton's season came to a close, but it was an impressive run for the Indians. The Tribe battled through a difficult non-league schedule, and bounced back after a stretch of five straight regular-season losses to become the District 11 runner-ups. Lehighton will say goodbye to a group of eight seniors, which includes future Temple Owl, Grace Shanton. However, the Tribe will bring back a trio of juniors. Dashing forward Lauren Marks will return alongside of Maura Phelan, while an experienced goalkeeper in Michelle Bozilesky will be back in 2017.SHARING IS CARING … All eight of Lake Lehman's goals were assisted. In fact, the final goal was scored on a double-assist. "You have 60 minutes of work and you do your job," Lipski said. "I think that they have done that in a spectacular manner this season."SINCE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY … Both of these programs have won a state championship. The Indians won in 2009, while Lake Lehman won a title in 2002.UP NEXT … Lake Lehman will clash with Oley Valley, the District 3 champion, in the semifinals on Tuesday. Oley Valley defeated Newport by a 3-1 tally over the weekend.
