Carbon man facing murder charge in NY

A Carbon County resident is facing a charge of second degree murder in New York, according to the Forum newspaper group of New York.

Rashon Venable, 24, of Meckesville Road, Albrightsville, recently waived extradition to Queens to face charges that he stabbed to death a young girl in her Cambria Heights home in November 2008.The published report stated Venable was matched to a DNA sample provided in Pennsylvania and it matched one in the national DNA database created and maintained by the FBI.Venable was arraigned in a Queens courtroom and jailed. He faces up to 25 years in jail if convicted of the charge.According to the report, on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, the body of Sabrina Matthews, 14, was discovered by her father inside her bedroom. The girl had a deep slash wound to her neck and a laceration to her right arm. There was no sign of forced entry.The news report also stated that recently New York City police were notified that there was a DNA match between Venable in Pennsylvania and the biological evidence that was recovered from the Cambria Heights crime scene.At the time of the murder Venable was 16 and living in Queens village, about 2 miles from the crime scene.On Sept. 18, 2014, Venable pleaded guilty in Carbon County court to one count of indecent assault.He was charged by state police at Fern Ridge with having sexual contact with his "best friend," a then-16-year-old female from Penn Forest Township. The incident occurred on May 27, 2009, at a home in the township.At the time of his arrest, troopers said the victim went to a friend's home to hang out. Besides the friend, Venable was also present.The victim told troopers that Venable was "her best friend."He allegedly asked her to enter a guest room to speak to her privately. Once in the room, Venable allegedly tried to kiss the victim, who then attempted to leave.The police report stated that Venable grabbed the girl, tossed her on the bed and raped her. She told police she told Venable "no" and to stop, and that she also struggled. Venable allegedly placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming.The arrest report also stated that the victim pinched Venable "really hard" and was able to scream because he moved his hand from her mouth. At that point, Venable allegedly got off her and she ran from the room.In a plea bargain, charges of rape, sexual assault, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, criminal attempt at rape, and one of two indecent assault counts were all dropped.Although 16 at the time of the incident, Venable was charged as an adult.On Dec. 17, 2014, Venable was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve nine to one day less 24 months in the county prison.The charge fell under the provisions of Megan's Law, meaning Venable is a registered sexual offender for 25 years.At the time of his sentencing, he was given credit for 121 days spent in jail on the charge.He began his prison term on Dec. 26, 2014, and was paroled after his minimum was served.
