Bombers, Canes meet for 2A title

A good recipe has an array of ingredients.

Take for example, beef stew. The meat is of course the main ingredient, but the stew tastes better when you add the potatoes, carrots, and celery. Basically, the more ingredients you add, the better the stew. The Palmerton Blue Bombers football team has found its winning recipe of late, and its ingredients are in the form of an array of pass catchers that have made it difficult for opposing defenses to key on just one player.Just like a great stew, it has all come together for the Bombers, as they prepare to face off with No. 1 seed Schuylkill Haven in the District 11 2A championship Saturday night at Pottsville's Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Bombers (6-5) like to spread the ball out in the pass game. Palmerton quarterback Garrett Perschy has had arguably the best passing season in school history, throwing for 1,947 yards with 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions.Perschy's receivers have been a big part of his success, with four Bombers' wideouts accumulating 200 yards or more. Do-it-all running back Mike Stasko leads the foursome with 681 yards and eight touchdowns, while Jared Mooney has 403 yards and four scores. Jordan Nelson has helped out with 282 yards and three touchdowns, and Mike Eckhart has collected 201 yards."The game plan doesn't change this week. We're going to try and spread them out and get the ball to our athletes in space," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "They're an aggressive defense, so we have to be able to pick up their blitzes, and our receivers are going to have to run good routes to get open quickly, which they've been doing."We have an experienced quarterback that is good at handling pressure, so it will be a challenge, but I'm confident in our kids abilities."Schuylkill Haven's 10-1 record hinges on its ability to run the football - maybe better than any team in District 11 - along with its attack-style defense. On the defensive side of the ball, the Hurricanes have collected a total of 33 sacks and 11 interceptions, bringing the heat and dialing up the pressure on almost every play."We like to be very aggressive, and we're definitely an attack-first defense. With their talent at quarterback, our goal is to obviously make him get the ball out quicker than he wants to," said Schuylkill Haven head coach Mike Farr. "The key will be what adjustments we make after we lineup, and see what they have on the their first couple possessions."They have playmakers and like to spread it out in the passing game, and we've been focused on that all week."The Bombers have been playing pretty solid defense of late, allowing just 8.5 points-per-game in their current four-game win streak. The test gets a little tougher this week however, as Schuylkill Haven brings its dominating rush attack to Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Hurricanes average exactly 300 yards rushing per contest and have four players with 595 yards or more on the ground. Leading the way for the Hurricanes is senior Mike Kalyan with 963 yards and 17 touchdowns. Quarterback Danny Lozada is just as dangerous as Kalyan, as he's rushed for 874 yards and 12 touchdowns. Preston Gehring has rushed for 634 yards and 10 touchdowns, while freshman Koby Brish has turned in a 595-yard and seven score season.Needless to say, the Bombers will need to bring the physicality factor up front come Saturday night."Our front four has really solidified since the middle of the season, and these guys have worked really hard to become a good unit," said Walkowiak. "They've been constantly evolving, and what I've been proud of is that our defense as a whole has responded to physical football teams over the course of our four-game win streak."They've been responding to the physical challenge and hopefully we continue that against a tough Schuylkill Haven team."

Palmerton has had one of the most potent pass offenses in the area this season thanks in large part to its outstanding corp of skill players. From left are wide receiver Jared Mooney, running back Mike Stasko, wide receiver Mike Eckhart and wide receiver Jordan Nelson. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
