Tobyhanna man charged with shooting wife

A Tobyhanna man was charged with aggravated assault after after police said he shot his wife multiple times on Friday.

The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department responded to a report at 7 p.m. of a home invasion involving shots fired at the residence of Thomas and Donna Kimmel on Knollwood Drive in Coolbaugh Township.Upon arrival, police said they found Thomas Kimmel, 64, intoxicated and uncooperative. He told the police that his wife was shot and he did not recall what happened.Officers entered the house and found Donna Kimmel, 54, lying on the floor bleeding from gunshot wounds. She was airlifted to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, where she was treated and later released.PMRPD’s Criminal Investigations Division secured several search warrants. It was determined through investigation that the Kimmels had been drinking and arguing most of the day. At one point, Thomas Kimmel was locked out of his residence, and his wife refused to let him back into the house. That is when he smashed a front window in order to get back in. During this time, police said Thomas Kimmel removed a 410/45 caliber handgun from an ankle holster and shot two times, striking his wife multiple times.During the search of the residence, police found a sawed-off shotgun.Thomas Kimmel was charged with aggravated assault, felony in the first degree, and aggravated assault, felony in the second degree; discharge of a firearm in an occupied structure, felony in the third degree; recklessly endangering another person, misdemeanor in the second degree; simple assault, misdemeanor in the second degree; and prohibited offensive weapons, misdemeanor in the first degree.Arraignment was before Judge Phil Riley.
