Walker postpones Koch's turkey farm hearing until December

A zoning hearing scheduled for a variance and special exception request to expand a Walker Township property to include a turkey farm has been delayed.

The township board of supervisors announced Thursday that the hearing, which had been scheduled for Nov. 10, has been pushed back to sometime next month. In September, the township's zoning hearing board reviewed the request of Linwood Koch, of 12 Koch Lane, Tamaqua.Koch was in search of a special exception under a section of the township's zoning ordinance to expand the present use of the property located on the west side of Catawissa, as a turkey farm. The property is located in the Enhanced Agricultural Preservation zoning district. In addition, Koch also sought a variance for expansion of a nonconforming use exceeding 25 percent of the area occupied by the use, as well as variances from the requirements of several sections.Several residents spoke on the matter, including two of Koch's sons. But, the board felt more information was needed in order to make a determination. The hearing was postponed until a later date.
