Moravian rolls to D-11 title

When you have the two highest-seeded teams meeting in the district championship game, you don't expect a lopsided outcome.

Unfortunately for Lehighton, that was the case Wednesday night when Moravian Academy struck quickly and didn't look back, repeating as District 11 1A champions with an 8-0 win over Lehighton. Before the game was 10-minutes old, Moravian Academy had taken a 3-0 lead as Mayv Clune scored two goals and assisted on another that was scored by Ashley Pearce."I think that sort of threw us off pace," said senior midfielder Grace Shanton of the Lions' fast start. "It took us out of our stride a little and I don't think we were ever really able to get back on track."Moravian Academy would strike three more times in the first half, holding a 6-0 lead at the break. Twice in the first half, Lauren Marks had breakaway opportunities, but the Moravian Academy defense was able to catch up to the play, ending Lehighton's best chances to get a goal. On the second breakaway, Moravian Academy was called for a foul, giving Lehighton a penalty corner, but the Indians were unable to convert as the first half came to an end."When we beat the good teams, we were all together," said Lehighton coach Karen Wall. "We just never got into that groove where we were all working together and doing the things that we needed to do against a team like this."Clune would score her third goal of the night just over three minutes into the second half. A few minutes later, Cassie Romanczuk scored her second goal of the night to push the lead to 8-0.The Indians, who qualified for a spot in the PIAA Tournament with their 3-2 overtime win over Pen Argyl in the semifinals, will now have to play the District 1 runner-up, which will be either Gwynedd Mercy or New Hope. Those two teams face each other today to decide the district championship."I have no doubt that we'll regroup and won't hang our heads. We'll definitely be ready to play next week," said Shanton. The PIAA Tournament begins on Tuesday, and Hall plans on getting her team back to a normal routine to get ready for the state championship."We just have to get to practice," she said. "We've got four days to get ready and we just have to work on keeping ourselves together and getting back to playing a more connected style of game."AN INDIANS' SUCCESS STORY... Lehighton finished the 2014 season with a 4-14 record. Hall took over the team the next season and it reached the district semifinals, where it lost 8-0 to Moravian Academy in a similar fashion. Lehighton's last district championship came in 2010.IN HER DEFENSE... While Lehighton wasn't able to get in tune defensively, Cheyenne Clifford had an impressive night on defense coming off the bench. Clifford made a number of key stops to prevent Moravian Academy from having even more offensive chances.SENIOR MANAGEMENT... Of the 11 starters in Wednesday's game, five were seniors and there were three other seniors not in the lineup, giving Lehighton a heavily senior laden team. "I think we all realize what's at stake and want to make the most of the time that we have left with this team," said Shanton, one of the team's seniors.
