Palmerton will play host to two veteran events onSunday, with the flagpole dedication preceding the Veterans Day parade on Delaware Avenue.

The day will begin with a ceremony honoring Palmerton native Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey."Prior to the parade, the American Legion Post 269, Palmerton VFW Post 7134, Vietnam Veterans of Carbon County, and other veterans' groups will dedicate the new 80-foot flagpole at the entrance to Palmerton, in honor of Sgt. Maj. Daniel Dailey," Post Commander Ed Moyer said.Dailey has held the post of the 15th sergeant major of the Army since Jan. 30, 2015, and previously served in every enlisted leadership role over his distinguished career. Dailey has been through four tours in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, and was deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He has been decorated with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and many more.A 20-by-36-foot garrison flag, which previously flew over Saddam Hussein's palace, will be raised on the newly installed flagpole."I think it would be a great day for Palmerton to have all of these veterans' organizations come together and recognize Sgt. Major Dailey," Moyer said. "He is from Palmerton, he went to school with my son. I want to thank him for all he has done, and his incredible career with the U.S. Army."Dailey will also act as grand marshal for the parade, which will start at 1:45 p.m., and will run from Sixth Street and Lafayette, down to Third Street, from Third to Delaware Avenue, and from Delaware Avenue down to Seventh Street, where it will disband."We have approximately 50 groups registered right now, from all over Carbon County," Moyer said. "Veterans' groups, fire departments, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and bands from all of the Carbon County high schools.
