It's an early Thanksgiving for many in the area as the Tamaqua Salvation Army is conducting a free food give-away on Tuesday until 8 p.m. or until supplies are gone. There is no income requirement and no registration is necessary, although a list of names is being taken by program coordinator Mel Latham to keep track of the total number of people served.
Among the five tons of fresh food available at no cost: carrots, pumpkins, apples, grapes, broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, onions, squash, peppers and limes.
According to Major Sharon Whispell, the food give-away is made possible through the generosity of Steve and Valerie Dunn of Dunn's Farm Market in South Tamaqua.
The event began at 3 p.m. at the Rowe Street entrance of the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., near Citizens Fire Co.
Whispell said the Dunns provided for a similar give-away this time last year, as well.
In addition, she credited Hope's Collision and Towing of Tamaqua with providing use of a flatbed trailer and bobcat to transport and unload the goods.
