Carbon woman gets prison for drug dealing

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term last week after previously pleading to a drug dealing charge.

Tara Ann O'Brian, 35, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve nine to 18 months on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - methamphetamine.O'Brian was arrested after a vice unit from the state police at the Hazleton barracks arranged a controlled buy from her using a confidential informant. The sale was made on Oct. 23, 2015, in Franklin Township. After the sale was made, police obtained a search warrant for the defendant's residence along First Street in Lehighton and found meth and various drug paraphernalia including baggies used in packaging drugs for sale and scales.When interviewed by troopers, O'Brian admitted the drugs found in the residence were hers.Defense attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau, of the public defender's office, told the court, "She knows she is going to jail. She is asking for the standard range sentence of nine to 18 months."He said she needs long-term counseling for a drug problem.O'Brian told Serfass, "I just want to go into something like the Salvation Army."Serfass responded, "I encourage you to go into something like Salvation Army. I feel that program is very good."In addition to the prison term, Serfass ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.She was given credit for 11 days spent in jail on the charge. The prison term began Friday.
