A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term Monday morning after admitting to assaulting his father and also entered a plea in a pending drug case.
Christopher Shane Kennedy, 25, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to serve nine to 24 months on a charge of simple assault and two to 12 months on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. However, Judge Steven R. Serfass ordered the prison terms run concurrent to each other and concurrent to a 18 to 36 months state prison term Kennedy is now serving at the state correctional institution at Camp Hill, Dauphin County.Jim Thorpe police arrested Kennedy on July 27 at the residence of his parents at 16 W. Fourth St. Police responded to a domestic dispute and on scene learned Kennedy had knocked his fatherto the ground and punched him several times in the face.Kennedy told Serfass he had been drinking before the incident and arguing with his parents over money. He told the court, "It kills me that I caused my father any pain. I love my father."Kennedy's mother, Carol, said her son needs help for a drug problem and didn't mean to strike his father.Kennedy added that he has been recently classified in the state system and will be getting placed in a program for his addiction problems. In addition to the jail term, Serfass ordered Kennedy to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render a total of 150 hours of community service work when released on parole.
