Over the past two years, truck traffic on Carney Road in Polk Township has increased as dump trucks traveling from New Jersey into Palmerton have often used the road as a shortcut.

"Carney Road isn't designed for that kind of heavy traffic," said Chairman Bruce Ahner. "We need to consider what we can do to limit the truck traffic going into Palmerton."Ahner suggested that the township consider weight limits on the road, and township engineer Russell Kresge suggested that the township ban all trucks with the exception of those that make local deliveries.Carney Road starts and ends within the township, but there is a curvy section of the road that is actually in Eldred Township, so any decision regarding the road will have to be made in agreement with Eldred Township.Two representatives of the West End Food Pantry addressed the supervisors regarding an upcoming event. Pantry director Karena Thek and Linda Kile requested permission from the supervisors for Santa Claus to arrive by helicopter at the firehouse on Nov. 26.The event will be open to the public and free of charge. The event is still being planned but the pantry intends to have hot dogs, hot chocolate and Christmas cookies for those attending. There will be entertainment and of course, Santa arriving by helicopter. The helicopter is being donated by Hi Tech Helicopters Inc., one of the sponsors of the event.Thek and Kile also asked the supervisors for permission to hang a banner across Route 209 in the township. Supervisor Michael Hurley said that the township will look into what permission would be needed from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation or any other authorities.There were also three Life Scouts present at the meeting to discuss proposals for Eagle Scout projects. The Scouts would like to work at the township nature trail to repair the two pavilions, to clear and trim the trails, and to repaint and repair signs.The Scouts present were Zach Reagle, Evan Bond and Chris Accanzo. The Scouts will take the winter to draft their proposals and seek approval for the projects. They hope to begin work on the projects in the spring.
