A Lebanon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday after admitting he drove a vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance with his young son in the vehicle. He entered a guilty plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Christopher Matthew Smith, 37, of Annville, was arrested on Oct. 13, 2014, along East Alley in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. Troopers were originally dispatched to a Weissport address for a disturbance. Police learned that one of the participants in the disturbance, Smith, had fled the scene with his 3½-year-old son in the vehicle.Police found the vehicle along East Alley and took Smith into custody. The child was in the vehicle. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Smith pleaded to one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Due to a prior criminal record, the penalties for the two charges were enhanced.Serfass sentenced him to serve nine to 18 months on the endangering charge and 72 hours to six months on the DUI count, with the terms running concurrently. On the DUI charge he was fined $1,500 and his license was suspended for 18 months. He must also serve 175 hours of community service.Smith has been in jail since his arrest and was given credit for 163 days spent in prison on the charges.
