Meeting on Schwab school tonight

The C.M. Schwab School Restoration Project board is holding a public meeting tonight.

The nonprofit group made up of Weatherly residents is trying to acquire the building that was the town’s high school from 1903-1991.The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Citizens’ Fire Co. No. 1., located at 107 Spring St. in the borough. The meeting will include updating the public on their efforts to acquire the Schwab school building, and the fundraising efforts to pay for it, according to board President Charlie Palermo Jr.The board continues to make offers to the bank that owns the property.“It’s more than just brick and stone and mortar to a lot of people — the public really is embracing it, and we’re just looking for that last push,” Palermo said.Palermo said that the bank has worked with them, but there is still some work necessary to bring both sides together. The initial asking price for the property was $229,000.“As a nonprofit, we need to be fiscally responsible and not spend what we don’t have,” Palermo said. The previous owner, Larry Halstead, paid $400,000 for the school in 1997, when the Weatherly School Board put it up for sale. If the local group is successful in purchasing the school, Weatherly Borough has agreed to maintain it for the use of the town. Borough council voted in May to agree to take over the building. The group will hold more public meetings as they continue to pursue the school.Donations can be sent to the C.M. Schwab School Restoration Project, P.O. Box 150, Weatherly, Pa. 18255.
