Jim Thorpe woman gets prison for drug dealing

A Jim Thorpe woman was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday morning after pleading guilty in a drug-dealing case.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Ashley Nicole Matz, 23, to serve three to one day less 24 months in the county prison on a charge of criminal use of a communication facility.She was arrested on Aug. 30 by the county drug task force and Mahoning Township police for her part in the sale of heroin to a confidential informant. The sale occurred at Mahoning and Seventh streets in Lehighton.Matz told Serfass, "I'm sorry. This time I'm ready to do something."Matz admitted to a longtime heroin addiction. She spent time in two inpatient, short-term rehabilitation programs but relapsed each time.She said she sold drugs to feed her habit. Court appointed defense attorney Adam Weaver said his client was also dealing with mental health issues.In addition to the jail term, Serfass ordered her to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, supply a DNA sample and render 100 hours of community service when released on parole.She has been in prison on the charges and was given credit for 47 days already served.
