Jim Thorpe dedicates parade to late friend

Children, and some adults, in costumes of all shapes and sizes lined the streets of Jim Thorpe on Sunday for the town's 22nd annual Halloween parade.

Kicking off the parade was the family of the late Doug Rontz, riding down Center Street in a trolley. Rontz was a Jim Thorpe businessman who passed away earlier this year.Jim Thorpe Lions Club parade committee chairman Jim Trainer called Rontz a "great friend to the parade over the years."The 2016 parade had 497 people, 71 vehicles and nine floats registered to participate in it.Winners were named in the best float and best group categories. The "Hungarian Hillbillies" from the Palmerton Hungarian Club won the top prize for best float. The Cat in the Hat float finished runner-up in that division.First place in the group division went to the Dreammaker Studios/Kory Rabenold Productions for their "Murder Ride" skit featuring "Mr. Pickles" and "Jinx.""I think it was really the most authentically Halloween group in the parade," said Brian Martz, who attended the parade with his wife and two children. "It was just real enough to put a little fear in you."The "Lions and Tigers and Bears" of Cub Scout Pack 138 finished as the second-place group.Scott Garza has attended the parade for 10 straight years and he believes it is one of the best in the area."I've been to most of them, and we keep coming back here," he said."My kids love it. We go for a train ride in town and then come up here for the parade. It's a great day for us. Traffic was a little rough downtown today, but this made up for it."The parade is a hit for the children as well."They just keep throwing candy," said 6-year-old Mary Lowry. "I've been chasing it down in the street."Signs of other holidays were evident through sightings of the Easter Bunny and as usual, Santa and Mrs. Claus brought the parade to a close, signaling that the holiday season is just around the corner.Others making an appearance at the parade included the Jim Thorpe Subway Man promoting the sandwich chain downtown and Mario's sidekick Luigi representing Great Clips.
