Tamaqua girls win SL title

BARNESVILLE - From the trophy presentation to the pictures that followed, the Tamaqua girls took it all in.

For the second straight year, the Raiders left Tuscarora State Park with a Schuylkill League team championship. The title capped a stellar campaign for Tamaqua, which went 12-0 in Division I competition during the season."It's a good platform going into next week, knowing it could be the last week and it's a one-and-done deal from this point on," Tamaqua head coach Tom Kanger said of next week's District 11 meet. "We had some pretty big expectations coming in, and I think we kind of followed through with what we thought we could do. It was a good day for us."I think we still could do better, which is good, especially going into next week knowing there are strong teams throughout the district - and we know the teams."On this day, the Raiders used their depth - finishing 3-4-7-10-13-17-19 - to win the team crown with 37 points. Lehighton took second with 99 points.Monika Shimko placed third (20:15) to pace Tamaqua. Pine Grove's Christina Difalco won the girls race in 18:50.Nearly unbeatable during the regular season, Shimko was disappointed to not leave as a league champion. But the senior was more pleased knowing what the team accomplished."I finished well but I didn't finish where I wanted to be," Shimko said. "But winning a team championship feels great because last year we won and this is my senior year, so it feels great."Sarah Maue took fourth (20:42), Nicole Wasserleben seventh (21:07) and Kailee Carroll 10th (21:27) for the Raiders. Maue and Carroll qualified for states a year ago, and Kanger is hoping that experience rubs off on the rest of this season."It helps a lot, the experience of the two (Maue and Carroll) that went last year, and Monika, who didn't make it last year, knowing that she has the talent to get there for sure," Kanger said. "I try to talk to them and tell them you want to get there and do something not just get there, so hopefully they'll do better."Marian's Tina Capparell, the 2014 Schuylkill League champion, placed second (19:31).Still hitting her stride after missing several meets at the beginning of the season with what the junior described as a viral issue, Capparell was pleased with her performance, an improvement on last year's time (20:41) and place (fifth)."I knew they (Difalco and Shimko) were going to be the girls at the top," Capparell said. "And I knew I was going to be at a disadvantage since this was the first big race since I've been back."For the season, it was rough for me. But this was my best time yet, so today went really well for me."Lehighton's Cera Gaston placed fifth (20:56), but the senior was more excited about her team's runner-up finish."It's so exciting because none of us ever expected it because we had a lot of tough losses from all the seniors that have left the past two years," Gaston commented. "But we pulled through, and a lot us, like me and Piper (DeMatte, 16th) placed better than what we thought."In the boys' race, Tamaqua's Brad Clemson placed seventh (17:25) and Adam Melnick 10th (17:37) as the Raiders finished third in the team standings with 102 points."It's not as good as I wanted to do but it's a good time. I'm happy with it," Clemson said afterward. "Today shows that we really put the work in. I'm really proud of the guys."Lehighton's Michael Blacketter finished eighth (17:27), a result he hopes will give him momentum heading into next week's district meet."I'm happy with how I finished today," Blacketter said. "I'm feeling pretty good about (districts)."The past couple of years I've been behind some of the top runners here, then when districts rolls around I'm normally ahead of them, so hopefully I can do that again next week."North Schuylkill took the top four spots and six of the first 11 to win the team title with 18 points.Chris McCormick won the boys' race for the Spartans with a time of 16:49.Jim Thorpe's Ben Saxon placed 14th (17:51) while Delana Nalesnik finished 15th (22:17) for the Olympians in the girls race.UNDERCARD… Tamaqua's Melanie Shimko won the girls' junior varsity race with a time of 23:10. Brianna Dumond (third, 24:04), Kailyn Erbe (fourth, 24:49), and Arianna Ryan (fifth, 24:43) gave the Raiders four of the top five spots. Lehighton's Mary Grace Collins took sixth and Alyssa Williams seventh, respectively.WINNING… Weatherly's Scott Zoscin won the boys' 1.8 mile junior high race in 11:07.NOT TODAY...
