Weissport borough hall to get much needed repairs

The Weissport Borough building will be getting some sorely needed repair work to the eaves and new soffit and fascia.

Borough council members accepted the bid Monday night from Schnell’s Sides and Signs in Lehighton to do the building repairs. The bid was for $950. Schnell’s was the only company to submit a bid.“They’re bringing the aluminum?” asked council member Greg May. “That’s a lot of aluminum.”Arland Moyer Sr., vice president of council, assured him the supplies were included in the bid price.According to Moyer, the work will include replacing the wood eaves on three sides of the roof and capping it with aluminum. It has been damaged for a while and animals like squirrels are getting in and making the situation worse.Thefts and damageMoyer also said the borough received a report that a newly-planted dwarf Japanese hydrangea was ripped out of the ground and stolen. It was taken sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. on Oct. 6.The Weissport Recreation Club and Festival Committee had just purchased it and other plants with money raised from the festival.“I think the police need to put up cameras,” he said.“It’s a shame that it has come to that.”Moyer said more damage has occurred in the park.Council member Brenda Leiby said the park bench by the tennis court is in terrible condition, too.May added that there is a stray dog running around town tearing up garbage bags.“If you see a dog running, call the animal control number,” he said.Moyer said if anyone has information about the stolen hydrangea, they should call the borough office at 610-377-5608.Other businessIn other business, Moyer asked the other council members to help in distributing moving permits.Whenever they see a moving van, he encouraged them to take a permit paper over to them. The $5 fee can add up and help offset some of the borough’s costs for garbage collection, Moyer said.“Just in this past week, we lost out on four of them and one person moving in,” he said.

Damage to the Weissport Borough building is evident. Monday night, borough council approved hiring Schnell's Sides and Signs in Lehighton to do the repair work. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
