MakerSpace offer opportunities for Slatington school students

Learning just got a whole lot more fun for students at Slatington Elementary.

Through a new program known as MakerSpace, students can create, program, design, build, explore, invent, problem solve, code, experiment and tinker.Instructor Shawn Green demonstrated several aspects of the new program with the school board on Monday.Green told the board MakerSpace are about students working on projects of their own design."We decided to pilot it this year," Green said. "We had our first week of classes last week."Green added, "we want the kids to do hands-on projects.""It's something the kids come to school really excited about," he said. "It's to see that there's more to life than just a test."Green said there are four primary categories that comprise MakerSpace: engineering, robotics, electronics and reverse engineering.Grant receivedAlso on Monday, Assistant Superintendent Karen Nicholas discussed the matter of building a community foundation with local preschools.Nicholas said the district received a check for $4,000 as part of a grant it applied for that will be used toward early childhood education."It will be to strengthen our early childhood education," Nicholas said. "It's always been our focus."RCN donatesSuperintendent Michael Michaels also announced that RCN recently donated school supplies to the district.Each year, RCN employees hold a school supply drive for a school district in the Lehigh Valley, and Northern Lehigh was the beneficiary of this year's collection.The donated items will be useful to students of all grade levels, and include everything from crayons and glue sticks to hand sanitizer and tissues.Michaels thanked the organization for the donation.
