District attorney: Fatal shooting at apartments

WILKES-BARRE (AP) - The district attorney has confirmed a fatal shooting at a crime-ridden apartment complex for low-income residents in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis says the shooting about 8 p.m. Sunday left one man dead at the Sherman Hills Apartments in Wilkes-Barre.Authorities didn't say if they have a suspect and the victim's identity was not immediately released. The Luzerne County coroner did not immediately return a call for comment Monday. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has criticized the complex's former owners and had warned that Section 8 housing subsidies were in danger if safety and security concerns at the apartments weren't addressed. The complex has been the scene of several fatal shootings, robberies and other violent crimes in recent years.
