Bears fall in EPC quarters

With the clock winding down in Saturday's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference girls' soccer quarterfinal match, it appeared as if overtime was on the horizon for Pleasant Valley and Whitehall.

It's funny how things can change in a blink of an eye.Kylee Cunningham punched in the game-winning goal with just three minutes remaining to give Whitehall a 2-1 victory over the host Bears. The win advances the Zephyrs (12-4-1) to Tuesday's EPC semifinals round, while the Bears will now be off until next week's district tournament."In the last 10 minutes, the teams weren't getting that many chances," said Pleasant Valley head coach Tim Hinton. "A lot of the play was in the middle of the field. You're thinking it's going to go to overtime, but they countered on a great play out of the midfield, they found their forward, and then their forward made a good pass to a wide open girl."With the seconds ticking away, Whitehall's Kate Bonshak ran down a through ball and set up a wide-open Cunningham on the left side of Pleasant Valley's goal. All Cunningham had to do was pick her place. The tally was Cunningham's second of the game. She put Whitehall in front 1-0 midway through the first half when Bonshak once again set her up.Pleasant Valley (12-4-3) was able to make adjustments and score early in the second half. Off a free kick from the right side of the field, Taylor Merklin lifted a pass in the direction of Darby Reiss. Reiss took the ball out of mid-air with a right-footed strike to even the score at 1-1."She (Reiss) put herself in the right spot," said Hinton. "We got a good cross in, and as long as we're there anything can happen."We created a lot of good chances today. Their goalie made some good saves, too. Whether she held it or not, she at least kept it out of the back of the net. Their defense did a good job of closing down and poking the ball away."Both teams had their fair share of chances - each side finished with 10 shots - but it was a matter of capitalizing on one more of those opportunities that was the difference for Whitehall."They finished the chances when they got them," Hinton said. "We just came up a little short with putting the ball in the back of the net. We had chances. The game was back-and-forth, it was high energy, and it was high pace, which is what we wanted."TWO-SPORT STAR ... Moments after the win for Whitehall on the soccer field, Cunningham raced back to the Lehigh Valley where she was scheduled to suit up for a pivotal field hockey playoff game for the Zephyrs. "Our coaches, athletic director and parents all help us out," Cunningham said.ONTO THE NEXT "SEASON" ... Pleasant Valley's run in the EPC tournament may have ended early, but it won't be long before they're back on the field for more postseason play. "This tournament was a second season for us, and unfortunately, this is over," Hinton said. "Districts is like the third season for us. We've definitely earned the right to play in the postseason with these teams."
