Update: FAA investigating small plane wreck

A small plane crashed on Saturday afternoon in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County, with the two persons on board escaping with minor injuries.

State police at Fern Ridge said the single propeller plane crashed in a wooded area south of Pawnee Trail in the Mount Pocahontas development about 3:57 p.m. The crash scene in on the Bethlehem watershed property.

The two occupants of the plane were identified by troopers as a 65-year-old male pilot and a 63-year-old female passenger, both from Saylorsburg. Both managed to free themselves from the wreckage. The two were taken by Lehighton ambulance to the Lehighton hospital for evaluation.

Troopers secured the area until the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board members arrived to take over the investigation. The civil air patrol was also summoned to the scene to assist.

Fern Ridge troopers were assisted by troopers from the Lehighton barracks and volunteers with the Penn Forest Township Fire Company.
