The holidays are rapidly approaching, and all children deserve to have at least one plaything to call their own.

To ensure that would be the case, a group of Tamaqua Area High School students played their hearts out Wednesday at the Tamaqua Area Sports Complex. Powder Puff Football Game.And while the students did their best to race the ball into the end zone during the Powder Puff Football Game, they were well aware that the final outcome was secondary to the task at hand.Junior Mady Coccio said she was just happy to be a part of the event, which consists of several girls' football teams backed by male cheerleaders."I think it's a great cause," Mady said. "It's nice to help out, and if this is how, then we'll do it."Fellow junior McKayla Wall said she makes it a point to participate."It's good to see the kids get toys for Christmas," McKayla said. "I love Powder Puff (football)."Freshman Rebekah Hromyak added, "It's a great benefit for the kids that aren't as lucky as us."Fellow freshman Maxine Beers took it a step further."I like that we come out here and all play football like for one game," Maxine said. "It's not more like competition; it's more like fun."The games saw the freshmen triumph over the juniors by a score of 7-6, while the seniors bested the sophomores 19-6.In the end, it was the seniors who came out on top with a 19-13 win over the freshmen in the Powder Puff Championship game.Roseann Weinrich, senior class adviser, said $1,100 was raised through the event, and that proceeds benefit Toys for Tots.Weinrich, a high school science teacher, said the money will be distributed to the Tamaqua Salvation Army for them to purchase the toys.The high school students also contribute toys, which are collected by the U.S. Marine Corps to give to the Salvation Army.The Tamaqua Area High School Class of 2017 and Biology Club sponsored the event."Shout outs to the senior class and Biology Club for helping make this a successful event," Weinrich said.
