Pleasant Valley rolls to another win

Think of Pleasant Valley football this season and offense quickly comes to mind.

After the Bears' 66-26 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rout of East Stroudsburg North Friday night, it was once again easy to dwell on the team's many playmakers and the nine touchdowns they produced. But a closer look at PV's Homecoming win will uncover that its defense played a key role in its sixth straight victory. After the Timberwolves marched down the field on their first possession to take a 7-6 lead, the Bears didn't allow a first down the next three times North touched the ball. Those stops set the stage for Pleasant Valley's potent offense, which scored each time afterwards to gain a sizable advantage."The defense did a good job," said PV head coach Mark Versuk. "They stayed home ... We had a couple little breakdowns, but I was very impressed with the way they played. Coach (Joe) Anderton had a great plan in place. We tackled well, and we kept (quarterback Thomas Melchiorre) in check. He's a really good player."We just had to get used to the pace of their offense. We didn't change anything up. I think it took us a series to get used to the pace of their option, because we really couldn't simulate that at practice. We tried, but they do such a good job of running it, it took us a series to settle in."While Pleasant Valley eventually adjusted to the Timberwolves' triple option, Eastburg North had no answers when the Bears had the ball.Versuk's club put points on the board on nine straight possessions, doing it both on the ground and through the air.Leading the way was Justin Richardson, who reached the end zone six different times. The senior gave PV a lead late in the first quarter when he snared a lateral from quarterback Brandon Keyes and took it in for a 1-yard score.Richardson and Keyes would hook up on three straight drives following that, completing TD tosses of 59, 38, and 16 yards to build 35-7 margin."We just have that connection from playing youth ball since when we were 10 years old," said Richardson, who finished with six catches for 166 yards. "We've always had that connection.""Justin does a great job," said Versuk. "We always start our offense with our playmakers and he's definitely one of them. We were able to get him the football and he was able to do what he has to do after he gets the ball. Yards after the catch are huge. He just continues to impress. There's not much he can't do."Keyes and Richardson connected again in the second half, while Keyes also hit Mike Brown with a 44-yard scoring strike. The Bears also received a couple touchdown runs from Mike Mitchell, who ran for 178 yards."We just wanted to get the ball to our playmakers and try to get some space - spread out their defense," said Versuk. "Our quarterback does a great job reading the defense and he was able to find the guy that was open. The line did a heckuva job blocking. And once our guys caught the ball, they were able to get into the end zone."BEARS BIG PLAYS ... Pleasant Valley opened the game with 12-or-more yards on four of its first five plays. The team finished the night with 19 plays of 10-or-more yards.KICKOFF SOLUTION ... Admitting his team had some trouble during the first half of the season with kickoffs, Versuk implemented some changes. During Friday's contest, the Bears either used pooch kicks or squibs. Two of the squibs resulted in recoveries by PV. "We made some adjustments," said Versuk. "We may pooch or go onsides ... Our kicker, Doug Cummings, does a great job whether he has to pooch it or whether he has to squib it. He had a great game, also adding a field goal and some extra points."PASSING ATTACK ... Keyes, who threw for 276 yards and five touchdowns, completed his first nine passes. He now has 27 TD tosses this season.
