Vehicle stops lead to drug arrests

Three traffic stops along Interstate 80 by state police at Fern Ridge led to the arrest of the drivers on drug counts.

Dewayne Harris, 37, of Newark, New Jersey, was stopped for speeding along Interstate 80 westbound in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County, at 6:18 p.m. on Sept. 23. Criminal activity was observed and Harris gave permission to search the vehicle. Found were 5 pounds of marijuana, multiple vacuum sealed bags of 3.6 ounces of cocaine and $4,000 in cash.Harris was taken into custody and charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and related counts. He was placed in the county prison in Snydersville pending arraignment.Karim Williams, 33, of Philadelphia, was stopped at 12:46 p.m. on Sept. 25 in East Side Borough, Carbon County, for multiple traffic violations. At the stop troopers observed indicators of criminal activity and a consent search of the vehicle was denied by Williams. A K-9 unit was brought to the scene and alerted officers of drugs inside. A probable cause search was conducted and found were 68 grams of cocaine and $570 in cash. Williams was on state parole at the time.He was taken into custody and charged with various drug counts including possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was placed in the county prison in Nesquehoning pending arraignment.Dawud Rifi Rice, 35, of Williamsport was stopped at 12:27 a.m. on Sept. 28 in East Side Borough for traffic violations. He was found to be in possession of heroin, marijuana and brass knuckles. He was taken into custody and charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, other drug charges and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon.
