Marian's McFadden advances

COOPERSBURG - The best golfers in the district were put to the test on Monday morning at Locust Valley Golf Club.

The par-72 course has tight, tree-lined fairways with multiple hazards surrounding the greens. As if that's not difficult enough, Mother Nature was howling with consistent winds throughout the day.Course difficulties aside, it didn't stop the area's best from putting on a show in the District 11 Golf Championships.Marian's Albert McFadden was one of those golfers. McFadden shot an 81, which was good enough to grab the fourth and final advancing spot to regionals"It was pretty good," said McFadden of his play on Monday. "You could always do better though."Despite the winds, Marian's No. 1 said he was able to hit some quality shots out of the tee-box."My drive was actually on today," McFadden said. "You have to take the wind into consideration on every hole, on every swing, even on a putt. It's very hard to win on these challenging greens. Nothing was holding in its place."Two other area golfers were part of the Class AA tournament field that was won by Notre Dame's William Mirams for the second-straight year. Tamaqua's Carson Schoener finished with a round of 87 and Marian's Nick Kurzinsky fired a 94. Both failed to advance.Despite not qualifying for regionals, Schoener was happy with his progress this year. He agreed with McFadden that chipping and putting was critical in Monday's conditions."The greens today were probably the hardest thing other than the wind," said Schoener. "You couldn't really stop the ball anywhere. Everything just rolled off farther than expected. The greens were fast and difficult, and the wind didn't help."Sunday it was super windy so I kind of thought today it could have been a lot of the same. It's definitely something you have to think about."A team competition was held simultaneous to the individual competition. Marian was part of the four-team field by virtue of capturing the Schuylkill League championship. In the team event, the Colts finished as runner-up to defending district champ Moravian Academy (343). The Colts had a team score of 363. Pine Grove was third and Mahanoy Area was fourth. Along with McFadden and Kurzinsky, Michael Latoff (94), Jacob Artz (94) and Jarod Paisley (98) composed the rest of the Colts' squad. In the Class AAA tournament, two Times News area golfers had earned a spot in the field by placing in the district qualifier last week.Only one of them was able to take part, however, as Pleasant Valley's Riley Held shot a 98, while Northwestern's Tyler Wiik sustained an injury prior to the tournament and couldn't compete. Nazareth's Kevin Scherr was the winner of AAA with a round of 74.In girls play, Saucon Valley's Sophia Israel shot a round of 91 to the AA competition and Emmaus's Sam Fritizinger won her third-consecutive AAA title with a round of 81.Nazareth was victorious in the AAA team competition with an impressive tally of 325.Both the team and individual regional tournaments will take place at Woodstone Country Club next Monday at 9 a.m."ANOTHER ONE" ...
