Pirates rally past Palmerton
Palisades has been a thorn in the side of the Palmerton football team over the years. The Pirates definitely have the Bombers number.
Trailing by two touchdowns entering the fourth quarter, the Pirates scored four times to pull away for a 42-28 win in a tough Colonial League battle on Friday night. In what appeared to be a game that see-sawed back and forth, Palmerton fell behind early 14-0, but then came back to score twice in the second quarter and two more times in the third quarter for a comfortable lead. However, the Pirates never quit and gained momentum after blocking a punt and taking over on the Bombers' 23 with just over nine minutes remaining.Four plays later, Palisades' quarterback Ethan Brader scored on a keeper from the seven and one of Jared Colette's six PAT's tied the score at 28-28.The Bomber offense never crossed midfield the rest of the nightThe Pirates added two insurance scores on a 45-yard strike from Brader to Chris Hallman with 5:32 left, and on another Brader keeper with 30 seconds left."We got worn down on both sides of the ball," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "But it really came down to mental mistakes where we had miscues that they turned into big plays. We had a blown coverage that gave them a touchdown. We had a punt blocked on a missed assignment that they capitalized on."That's where good teams make plays and you've got to put them away, We were up by two touchdowns and credit to them for coming back. I have to give our credit to our kids for also coming back when down 14-0. They could have packed it in but they showed heart and determination. The bottom line is we need to get better in critical game situations."The Pirates scored on their first possession after recovering a Bomber fumble on the hosts' 29.On their fourth offensive play, Brader scooted into the end zone on a 17-yard run that gave them a 7-0 lead 8:36 left in the opening quarter.Near the end of the first quarter, Palmerton ran out of downs on the Palisades' nine yard-line. The Pirates then began a 14-play drive and Colette scored from the one to make it 14-0 with 8:17 left in the half. Then it was the Bombers turn.Freshman Jordan Nelson intercepted a pass and raced 60 yards to paydirt to bring the Bombers within a score at 14-7.With 34 seconds left in the half, Mike Stasko caught a Garrett Perschy pass for three yards to tie it at 14 apiece.Unable to move the ball on the ground, Palmerton went to the air in the third quarter to score its next two TDs to take the lead. Both were bombs by Perschy.First he connected on a 79-yard strike to Mike Stasko, then it was Jarred Mooney on the end of a 64-yard pass for the second."Garrett (Perschy) is a warrior and we did what we could do there with him about 80 percent tonight," said Walkowiak.RECORDS BROKEN ... Perschy broke the career touchdown pass record with the three TDs now having 33 total. He also set a record for career passing yards with his 254 on the night and now has 3,593. The previous mark was held by Brian Morgan with 3,560 yards.DOMINANT PIRATES ... Palisades has defeated Palmerton five straight times with the Bombers last winning, 7-6, back in 2011.
